장대현의 학생들은 저마다 특별한 삶의 이야기를 품고 있습니다.
분단된 한반도의 현실을 누구보다 가까이에서 경험했고, 낯선 환경에서 새로운 삶을 시작했습니다. 장대현중고등학교는 그 경험이 한 사람의 한계가 아니라 더 넓은 세상을 이해하는 힘이 되고, 언젠가 남과 북을 이어주는 소중한 자산이 될 수 있다고 믿습니다.

2014년 3월 13일, 13명의 탈북학생과 함께 시작한 장대현학교가 어느덧 개교 12주년을 맞았습니다. 2022년에는 부산시교육청으로부터 영호남 최초의 학력인정 탈북청소년 대안학교로 인가받았고, 2023년 장대현중고등학교로 새롭게 출발했습니다.

지난 12년 동안 우리가 가장 중요하게 생각해 온 것은 학생 한 사람 한 사람의 삶과 가능성이었습니다. 학생들이 새로운 환경에 안정적으로 뿌리내리고 자신의 삶을 긍정하며, 스스로 미래를 만들어갈 수 있도록 학업과 정서, 진로와 공동체생활을 함께 교육해 왔습니다. 개인별 맞춤교육으로 배움의 기초를 다지는 한편, 독일어와 독일문화 교육을 통해 분단과 통일의 경험을 배우고, 영어교육과 독일·미국 현지 체험을 통해 더 넓은 세계를 직접 만나도록 하고 있습니다.

한 졸업생은 미국에서 석사과정을 마친 뒤, 미국의 씽크탱크 기관인 워싱턴 허드슨연구소 인턴연구원으로 근무하며 통일을 준비하는 일, 북한인권을 위한 활동에 참여하며 자신의 경험과 배움을 세상과 나누고 있습니다. 한때 분단의 현실을 자신의 삶으로 겪었던 한 학생이 교육을 통해 성장하고, 세계를 경험한 뒤, 다시 북한과 한반도의 미래를 위해 자신의 역할을 찾아가고 있습니다.

우리는 이러한 모습을 보며 장대현이 말하는 ‘통일인재’의 의미를 다시 생각합니다. 통일인재는 단지 통일에 대해 많이 아는 사람이 아닐 것입니다. 남과 북의 서로 다른 삶을 이해하고, 다른 배경을 가진 사람들과 함께 살아갈 줄 알며, 자신의 경험을 더 나은 사회를 만드는 힘으로 바꿀 수 있는 사람이어야 합니다. 그리고 대한민국을 넘어 세계와 소통하며 한반도의 이야기를 자신의 목소리로 전할 수 있어야 합니다.

2026년에는 장대현의 이야기가 학교 담장을 넘어 세계와 만나는 특별한 일도 있었습니다. 장대현학교와 학생들의 삶을 오랜 시간 기록한 제레미 워크먼(Jeremy Workman) 감독의 다큐멘터리 < School for Defectors >가 미국의 여러 국제영화제에서 잇따라 수상하며 3관왕에 올랐습니다. 보스턴 독립영화제(IFFBoston) 장편 다큐멘터리 부문 심사위원대상, 데드센터 영화제(deadCenter Film Festival) 장편 다큐멘터리 부문 심사위원 특별상, 로드아일랜드 국제영화제(Rhode Island International Film Festival) 감독선정상 1등을 수상했습니다.

학생들의 삶을 통해 분단과 탈북의 이야기가 과거의 아픔에 머무르지 않고, 성장과 가능성, 그리고 미래에 관한 이야기로 전해지고 있다는 점에서 더욱 뜻깊습니다. 졸업생의 삶을 통해 장대현에서 시작된 교육이 세상으로 이어지고, 다큐멘터리를 통해 장대현의 교실에서 시작된 이야기가 세계와 만나고 있음을 보여주고 있습니다.

이제 장대현은 다음 10년을 바라봅니다. 우리는 학생들의 과거보다 그들이 만들어갈 미래에 더 큰 관심을 두겠습니다. 분단의 경험을 상처로만 남겨두지 않고 사람을 이해하는 힘으로, 남과 북을 잇는 힘으로, 더 넓은 세계와 소통하는 힘으로 바꾸어가겠습니다.

통일은 어느 날 갑자기 시작되는 일이 아닐 것입니다. 서로 다른 삶을 살아온 사람들이 만나고, 이해하고, 함께 살아가는 경험에서 이미 시작되고 있습니다. 장대현중고등학교는 바로 그 작은 통일을 오늘의 교실에서 먼저 살아가는 학교가 되겠습니다. 한 사람의 삶이 남과 북을 잇고, 대한민국을 넘어 세계와 만날 수 있도록 장대현중고등학교가 그 길을 함께하겠습니다.

Each student at Jangdaehyun carries a unique life story.
They have experienced the reality of the divided Korean Peninsula closer than anyone else and have begun new lives in an unfamiliar environment. Jangdaehyun Middle & High School believes that this experience is not an individual limit, but a power to understand a wider world and a precious asset that will one day connect the North and the South.

On March 13, 2014, Jangdaehyun School began its journey with 13 North Korean defector students and has now reached its 12th anniversary. In 2022, it became the first accredited alternative school for North Korean youth in the Yeongnam and Honam regions, authorized by the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, and took a new leap forward as Jangdaehyun Middle & High School in 2023.

Over the past 12 years, what we have valued most is the life and potential of each individual student. We have provided comprehensive education spanning academics, emotional support, career guidance, and community living so that students can firmly root themselves in a new environment, embrace their lives positively, and shape their own futures. While building solid academic foundations through personalized instruction, we also teach them about division and unification through German language and culture programs, while enabling them to meet the broader world firsthand through English education and experiential field trips to Germany and the United States.

One graduate, after completing a master's degree in the United States, served as a research intern at the Hudson Institute, a U.S. think tank. Through work dedicated to preparing for Korean unification and advocating for North Korean human rights, this alumnus is now sharing their personal experience and learning with the world. A student who once personally lived through the reality of division has grown through education, experienced the world, and is now actively finding their role for the future of North Korea and the Korean Peninsula.

Witnessing these achievements, we reflect deeply on what it truly means to be a "Unification Leader" at Jangdaehyun. A unification leader is not simply someone who knows a lot about unification. It must be someone who understands the different lives of the North and the South, knows how to live alongside people from diverse backgrounds, and can transform their own experiences into a force for building a better society. Furthermore, they must be able to communicate beyond South Korea with the world and share the story of the Korean Peninsula in their own voice.

In 2026, the story of Jangdaehyun reached beyond the school walls and met the global community in a special way. School for Defectors, a documentary film by director Jeremy Workman that chronicled the lives of Jangdaehyun School and its students over a long period, received consecutive honors at several international film festivals in the United States, winning three major awards. It received the Grand Jury Prize for Feature Documentary at the Independent Film Festival Boston (IFFBoston), the Special Jury Prize for Feature Documentary at the deadCenter Film Festival, and 1st Prize for Director's Choice at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.

This is deeply meaningful because, through our students' lives, the story of division and defection is no longer confined to past pain, but is shared as a narrative of growth, potential, and the future. It demonstrates that education started at Jangdaehyun extends to the broader world through the lives of our graduates, and the stories born in our classrooms are connecting with the global community through this documentary.

Now, Jangdaehyun looks forward to the next decade. We will focus more on the future our students will create than on their pasts. Rather than leaving the experience of division as merely a scar, we will transform it into the power to understand people, to bridge the North and the South, and to communicate with the broader world.

Unification will not happen overnight. It is already beginning through the everyday experience of people from different backgrounds coming together, understanding one another, and living as one. Jangdaehyun Middle & High School will walk alongside our students so that each individual life can bridge the North and the South, and carry out a small unification in today's classrooms that extends beyond Korea to meet the world.
